Ann dozed, warm and delightfully at peace; content in a way she didn't ever remember being.
The
panoply of passion that had carried her on a palanquin of pure unfettered
indulgence had been everything she had ever desired or needed; the absolute
expression of her repressed aristocratic fantasies. Burt had been everything; a
conglomeration of every masculine virtue; the ideal concert of brawn, dark
sexual experience, single-minded intent and simple innocent affection. He was
worth a thousand Richard Hurleys. Riches meant nothing compared to the candor
and clarity in Burt's simple soul. He was the perfect man.
Ann
stretched, like a baby in the crib, her smile stretching.
Then
her eyes popped open.
"Oh
God."
She
sat up and looked at her surroundings: the dirty hayloft; the crumpled pallet
and its weathered blanket; the gaps in the door; the rusty stove; the old tin
bath. The memories of her life as Burt weren't prominent anymore. They hadn't
been for some time - she knew herself only as Ann now really - but she wasn't
Ann anymore and there was enough Burt in her still to feel the sudden weight of
this abominable situation battering her down and pinning her as though a tree
had fallen on her heart.
How
far had she let this go? How deeply had she allowed herself to wallow in the
deadly embrace of tantalising degradation?
Too
far. Too deep. And enough to forget herself entirely.
Her
breath caught and rattled in her throat. She couldn't hurl it out through her
lips; couldn't draw it back in. It was a man trap; all of this. It was nothing
less than a trap baited with mesmerism and lust. And if she remained here much
longer then she would never get out. She really would be Mavis Gibbs forever;
an uncouth harlot, spawned and mired in poverty and dissolution to the end of
her days.
Ann
scrambled up. She didn't want this. She couldn't dare risk even another minute
here for fear its hooks would snare her completely. She had to get out.
She
scrabbled for her clothes, roughly pulling them on, noting half way through
dressing with an eerie sense of despair that already her decorum had been
whittled into a lower set of standards. In her haste she had forgotten much of
what she'd learned in London in her gentrification. Her actions were overly
casual; with no regard for primness or propriety.
"I'm
not Mavis," she muttered. "I'm not Mavis. I'm Ann. I'm Lady Ann Neville."
But
her voice betrayed her. It wasn't broad Yorkshire; not now she was no longer
lost in the moments of lust, intoxicated on Burt's virility; but the quality of
her voice wasn't clipped and controlled as it had been a day earlier.
"Oh
what have I done?" she said, her forehead crinkling. "Why on Earth
was I so stupid?"
She
went to the hayloft door, straightening her skirts hurriedly, then she grasped
the pendant, tucked away safely in her pocket and stared at it, drawing herself
together; telling herself it would be alright.
As
long as she had the pendant she could reverse this terrible mistake any time of
her choosing. Or... almost any time. She just had to be cautious. That was
all.
She
looked back at the dishevelled pallet on the floor and the sight of it brought
back the memory of her time with Burt like it was a pinpoint of light in the
corner of her eye.
Had
it been a mistake really?
Hadn't
it been exactly what she had wanted? More than she ever could have
expected?
Of
course it had been.
Whatever
happened next she couldn't regret that. Not for a second.
Ann's
lips curled in a dirty smile, reliving the intense pleasure for a moment
longer, then she let herself out into the cool morning air and set off toward
Griply Hall.
I.ve heard of magic wands but I think Burt must have a magic "wand" given how addictive it is to both parties :)

DeleteOoh how dreadful if Ann were to wallow in tantalizing degradation permanently... Kind if hoping that pendant will slip beyond her grasp by some happy accident and she'll be facing another tough stint in the hay loft
ReplyDeleteI for one would love another stint in the hayloft as soon as possible.
Delete"daily nightly and ever so rightly"
DeleteOne day soon.
DeleteI wonder if anyone will ever use the pendant starting with the intent for the switch to be permanent.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting thought, John, I like the way that could work out.
DeleteI must be a little slow, I just noticed that now she is "ann" as opposed to "lady ann" as she was referred to earlier. creeping senility...what was I saying?
ReplyDeleteHuh?
Deletein the beginning of lady anns folly. the "narrator" refers to her as Lady Ann. now the "narrator" is referring to her as Ann. Its like enough of the switch has taken place to make her "common" but still Ann.
Deleteyou should write more stories abaut golden gloom or f2f body swap :( i love that kind of stories
ReplyDeleteGive me time. I'll get back to it. And Cleaner is f2f... Kind of.
DeleteIf you get A New You then you'll find some F2F and my next book has Golden Gloom AND F2F!
How's that for service?
I've been following Lady Ann since the beginning and it certainly has some interesting and enjoyable twists. Also interesting how you keep each chapter very short leaving I would guess plenty of elbow room to think ahead. Shades of Downton Abbey also cross my mind now and again too.
ReplyDeleteHowever there's one underlying element that's starting to emerge that's a bit puzzling and that is that the original Lady Ann who was presumably in her twenties (?), seems to have instinctively become Burt completely with strangely no trace left of her original born ingrained female identity left over from her childhood years. Ditto the original Burt who became Lady Ann and is now Mavis, suddenly really afraid of losing his "artificial" Lady Ann identity if he doesn't act quickly.
I would have thought that deep down in both the original Lady Ann's and Burt's subconscious there has to be some occasional stirrings, flashes of memory or even strange utterances about something that happened during their childhood years even though they're both currently enjoying themselves more or less to the hilt.
For example the original Burt, then Lady Ann now Mavis, suddenly remembering and mentioning some crazy childhood prank he shared with some of the village kids now of course all grown up. Equally the original Lady Ann, now Burt, also suddenly remembering say a shared happy experience with Harriet or with her parents then making a chance strange remark that weirdly sticks for some reason in Harriet's memory when say he's saddling her horse.
It's this sudden strange and inexplicable expressed flash of memory each ought to be having now and again that I keep feeling is missing making it all lack overall credibility. In other words and as we all know, childhood memories always run very deep and are never entirely lost.
How to remedy this ? Well that's your province obviously but it could perhaps occur simultaneously for both say a fraction of a second just after the pendant's been used. Suddenly remembering for an instant who they both were to begin with before it's completely forgotten again. Each momentarily sensing/recognising the original person they were deep underneath as I think it could well fill in this gap, creating a permanent and underlying foundation running along at the bottom of the story no matter what the future holds for both. Interestingly this could get hilariously complicated for village life if Mavis joins in !
Anyway just some passing thoughts nevertheless all extremely enjoyable as it obviously is for you.
Well done and thanks !
Paul ;-)
Hi Paul,
DeleteWow. That's an interesting comment. And food for thoughts.
I guess that in stories as in life, people don't always react in the way you might expect them to. And I guess also there is a certain focus that I maintain on aspects that (a) keep the story on target and (b) interest me specifically. That kind of old memory stirring is relgated in favour of exploring the more interesting (to me) new memories they take on.
It is true that anyone changed by the pendant retains some of their initial identity and at some point in the future it might be interesting to explore that focus in a backwards-looking way: what is being lost rather than what is being gained.
Thanks for the advice and long term support. I'll give it a good bit of thought.
Hopefully you'll continue to enjoy Lady Ann far into the future. It's going to be going on for a few years yet!
Emma
Interesting and I see your point....
DeleteActually I think what started this was at the back of my mind it was pretty obvious that Lady Ann was mentally a strong character anyway and that Burt was much less so for obvious reasons, so I was a little surprised she eventually lost out so easily seemingly without a struggle. Loss of one's identity is a pretty scary thought !
Incidentally I wasn't implying one at the expense of the other rather how the two could and would eventually get on together. Two inner personalities meeting up for the first time rather than retrograded later on, over and above the fun of the physical change itself. With the new persona either gradually taking over, getting on famously or slowly losing out to the other.
I rather like the idea of getting on famously I know I would - lol !
Look forward to many more installments.... ;-)
Hey. I was discussing this with another fan who thought you raised some good points. I then remembered that I've actually outlined some chapters later on that explore some of these themes. It won't be for a while yet but watch this space!
DeleteActually I just retread this episode and there are several references to Ann's past life as Burt!
DeleteSounds excellent look forward to it ! :)
DeleteI wonder what is it about transformations that is so constantly interesting....?
Paul
I know the answer to that one. But what's your answer?
DeleteActually I just retread this episode and there are several references to Ann's past life as Burt !
DeleteAh sorry I've been referring to Ann's past life as Ann lol....!!
I know the answer to that one. But what's your answer?
DeleteNo idea as I'm perfectly happy as I am lol !! Perhaps it's the sheer impossibility of it all....?
Hmmm. Ann's past life as Ann? Well it's no secret that I was always more fascinated in the Ann to Burt swap and I explore him taking on Burt's memories quite a lot in LA1.
DeleteIt's true I didn't do it so much for Burt becoming Ann but again, it just isn't an area that inspired me to do so. (Shrugs)
