I was up until 2:30 last night making final changes and I can finally, and happily, say that Criminal Record has been published!
What it Says on the Back of the Book
Holly Thorpe has it all – a handsome boyfriend, a place waiting for her at Cambridge University, and wealthy parents who love her dearly – but something isn’t quite right and she doesn’t know what that is.
Sadie Wilson is everything that Holly isn’t. She’s loud and brash, bawdy and morally bankrupt. She has no future and no money, and only a life of vice and sin waiting for her.
But when Holly and Sadie inexplicably swap places, they are each of them hurled into a life they could never have expected.
The well-spoken and chaste Holly finds herself falling into Sadie’s dark and sordid world, with no inhibitions suddenly to hold her back.
And Sadie is now Holly- a dyed-in-the-wool criminal in a land of sports cars and manor houses who suddenly has great wealth within her reach.
As both girls find themselves drawn into their new roles, they must each ultimately make a choice.
Will they fight and struggle to achieve their dreams?
Or let their darkest fantasies seduce them?
How To Get It
Well first of all, you can read the preview chapters right up to after the first change by clicking here.
You can either read Criminal Record as a conventional book or electronically on your PC, smart phone, Kindle, or tablet.
If you get it on Amazon then it will send it to your Kindle if you have one. Or you can get the Kindle app on your phone, PC or tablet.
If you get it from Lulu they'll post the actual book to your house. How cool is that???
Click here to get the electronic version.
Click here to get the physical book.
The Price
Well as I'm pursuing my dream of being a published author, there is a price. But what I've cunningly done is put it on at a super low price initially so that friends and family can get it on the cheap. I'll put the price up to normal levels in a couple of weeks but so you guys don't have to break the bank to check it out, it's now on for:
77p for the electronic version (or 99 cents over in America)
£5.99 for the proper book
Bargain!

ReplyDeleteThanks buddy!

Thank you, Emma. Already bought it and delved in. This is one of your best stories, second to Cleaner only, in my opinion. My only "complain" really is the subconscious nature of the changes, I much rather prefer when the changes are more gradual, when the character is forced by cicrumstances to adapt. For example, gutter speech details are excellent, but it would have been far more interesting if the new Sadie kept her old speech patterns, but was forced to dumb down to fit in because of all the strange looks the people were giving her. But that could be just me. Great story overall, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Camille, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Come back and say how you like it as you go on.
Delete(And if any other readers would like to leave feedback I'd love to hear it)
I take your point on the vocal patterns. To me, enforced vocal changes are one of the more potent elements of this kind of story. Transformations without some kind of enforced personality/vocal changes don't really float my boat.
Keep the feedback coming!
Emma
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step into somebody else's shoes; their life; their body? To see yourself as others may see you; to have a different outlook on life, with different beliefs and different morals? To lose your inhibitions, or to gain some?
ReplyDeleteThen step into the world of Emma Finn and her fascinating characters in this rollicking tale of crime, sexual tension and murder; where moral compasses swing back and forth as you become caught up in the race to see which of our two protagonists will prevail, and who will fail?
Wow! Thank you! Praise indeed!
DeleteThis kind of stuff is exactly what makes writing worthwhile!
Thank you!
I enjoyed it a lot. I like the changes you made from the original, and I really liked the speech patterns and change in personality for Sadie and Holly. I admit I like the good girl going bad motif more, so I liked what you did with Original-Holly. Adding the racism component as well as gutter language I thought was quite well done.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't crazy about the end, though. First, it seemed like Original-Holly was going to see Mik in jail, and you do have to remember that Mik, although nice to Sadie, was rather a bastard. So I wasn't rooting for Holly to get with him. Also, even if she found herself and could be true to herself, I'm not sure why that would result in her using gutter-language.
I'm also somewhat mixed about if Original-Sadie would be able to kill Holly's parents. She did come off as a bit sociopathic, but murder still seems like quite a leap. So that threw me off a bit.
Anyway, overall quite enjoyable and I'd definitely recommend it to any fan of transformation stories or your previous works.
Hey, Thanks for the critique!
DeleteSPOILERS AHEAD!
In answer to your points... The change in speech patterns at the end are a linguering effect of the magic prompted by choice, rather than a choice as such. Her decision to seek out that certain somebody isn't necessarily going to go well but she still wants to try it. I guess we'll see what comes of it in the vaguely planned sequel...
As to the murder question... I find that characters do as they choose to some extent in my writing. The original Sadie did turn out to be rather more sociopathic than we might have originally thought but she was a bit unstable and strange circumstances sometimes breed extreme reactions. It's worth pointing out though that she was unable to go through with it each time it came to the crunch so maybe she's not as bad as all that!
Heh heh. Mik really is a bastard! But there's a certain allure to him to in a crazy kind of way...
I just finished this great novel a couple days ago. I posted a 5-star review on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and on Goodreads. LOVED IT! Very well done!
